Can it be that I have reviewed almost no Glenfiddich all this while?
Glenfiddich-Glenlivet 30 yo 1963 / 1993 Cadenhead 51.7% ~green glass white label
A moment of truth as frankly I have not tried a 60s Glenfiddich before, and the 60s are full of surprises both good and bad. But no, according to this Cadenhead, modern Glenfiddich has pretty much stayed the course. Here we have a light fresh Speysider full of cut pears and fresh greens. There is something compelling in it as it’s lightness belies the elegant nuances of subtle greens and buoyant oils. Find here drops of paraffin, a sprig of angelica, a pinch of galbanum, clean green tea, a bit of coriander and pine resin with the soothing weight of ivy cough syrup. The ascerbic bite of green pepper and sugared mint makes it more strident on the tongue than expected as well. A real natural beauty.
Glenfiddich 1974 / 2002 50th Anniversary Of The Coronation Of HM Queen Elizabeth II #2336 48.9%
The wood is rather loud here with leather, caramel, tobacco, fresh tea leaves, oak tannins. But also baked apple and shortbread. Thin resin and dry woods. There are some fudgey aspects but also some dry ones and overall it remains on the light end of the scale. A sweet and boubon-y entry on the tongue and a touch of violets and then a vacant heart. And then it turns spiritous and brittle then dry towards the (quick arriving) finish. Really quite parched and acrid now. Dear KC you were right.
