Bellevue 17 yo 1998 Duncan Taylor #94 52.2%
Papery dry bark, moist spongecake, and sugar glaze with hints of acerbic lemon zest. A lot more shows up on the tongue, where we get hot resins, spicy aniseed-cinnamon warmth and a tonic bite. An earthier side is evident which gives this rhum a lot of depth – hot lubricated moving metal parts, some gentian violet, and sweet and sour pastilles. Sweet, spicy and phenolic in parts. Totally enjoyable. 84 pts.
Bellevue 18 yo 1998 Kill Devil Hunter Laing 58.2%
MUCH more phenolic now, with fusel oils, hot tar and petrol. Not as sweet as the Duncan Taylor, in fact it’s got a bit of a Jamaican accent. Soot, ammonium chloride, and licorice candy. Dry palm sugar, and some dark oozing sap. Impressively complex really, it’s salty, barky and also bitter with a dry quinine but effervescent snap on the tongue. Eye opening-ly good. 87 pts.
