Glen Grant 8 yo Securo Cap 100 proof
An old nose – slightly dirty with grimey surfaces, mineral oil flecked with bits of carbonised something or other, and (wonderfully) no glass or OBE. Straw, drops of honey and thin wax. Echoes of petrichor. Actually much more phenolic on the tongue, and sprightly without a hint of its age. And yellow overtones only show up again at the finish. Great old Glen Grant despite it’s straightforward simplicity. 87 pts.
Glen Grant 15 yo Securo Cap 70 proof
Rather typical for an old whisky, and somewhat tired, with chamomile tea and leather creme, old glass and also warm wax. There’s soft leather and hints of rancio, touches of gula melaka, and some starchy-ness. Hints of sandalwood. A pungent leafy-ness comes through on the tongue, with mouldering cupboards plus odd mothball or two. Not a fan of this thick musty quality you get in old whiskies sometimes. Educational nonetheless. 78 pts.
