Old, tatty and honest to goodness Ben Nevis.

I am late to the wonders of these 90s Ben Nevis. Wonderfully mineral profile with chalk, pine needles, wet clay and a host of crunchy minerals. Crisp grasss underfoot, and here comes a very yeasty, bready side with toasted brioche, cold butter and merest hint of zest. Palate is chock full of minerals again with chalk, clay and minerals. Now herb butter rounds off this malty and ample mouthfeel. Great character! 90 pts.

Again minerals galore, along with crisp citrus peel and something hot and green. Wasabe? Or a very green menthol. Deepheat rub on the tongue. Soothed by an oily tincture. Cut grass on a hot day. Pungent arugula. On the tongue somewhat extreme with lots of chilli seed and ginger heat. What happened in Ben Nevis in the late 90s? These whiskies are up there next to Clynelish and Highland Park. 87 pts.

It was clear right from the start that the Fighting Fish would be a tough contender to beat. Love the name! 😀
