Tomatin 23 yo 1981 / 2005 Whisky Wizard #18244 46%
A naked Tomatin with little discernable wood influence, so it’s all about the spirit – so: Butter, toasted cereals, malted barley, and voluminous piles of orchard fruit of varying ripeness. One you get past the zing of the green apple there’s lovely soft tones of gentle peach and Australian mango (which is less ‘tropical’ if that makes sense). Fresh and fruity at 23 years, with a nubile charm. Surprise on the tongue with fizzy juice! And fruit eau-de-vie, and a little pine and chichona notes developing. Sexy but easily overlooked. 89 pts
Tomatin 34 yo 1976 / 2010 The Whisky Agency & 3Rivers 51.1%
Rich but dry. Cocoa cans, blackened wood, and those dried purple overtones. It’s was an excellent oloroso I think. Roasted nuts. Graphite flecks, a drop of hot tar. skinned purple plums and shrivelled prunes. Black tea, touches of salty liquorice, and dried medicinal roots. Great example of a well aged sherry matured whisky where the oak remains controlled. It does stay in the light and aromatic camp and lacks those ‘bass notes’ that would have added weight and depth. 88 pts
