Highland Park 33 yo 1977 / 2010 Perfect Dram 52.3%
Camphor, thin waxes and vitreous resins spread thin and translucent, with a brittle quality to it. Wispy strands of white smoke. Lots of sweet wood effect, herbal teas, burnt malt, lots of astringent fruit of the fruit sticks sort. Finally some dry phenols as well. On the tongue its the oak that speaks first, though the phenols too are much louder here with hot machines, lubricants and dirty tools. A subtle kind of complexity that demands attention, and watching the peat unfold is a treat. An underrated distillery. 88 pts
Highland Park 10 yo 1973 /1984 SMWS 4.2 57% ~ destroyed label
I have it on expert authority who retrieved this bottle from the cellar that this is SMWS 4.2. The nose does push the point I think. White smoke with heather and burnt herbs on BBQ coals. Thin wax and dried resin again – some similarities! Salt, lubricants, stewed acidic green fruit like a jam made from herbs and tart green berries. Grubby chalk and a handful of dirt. On the tongue it’s searing metal with white flashes, tnt and a boiling herbal tea – what a heel turn from the nose. Though an emergent green fruitiness never did quite make it out but it was fun to watch. A little harsh and salty. 85 pts
