Mortlach 1969 Gordon & Macphail for Donini 56.3%
This whisky is elegance liquefied. Universally dry, but a nose full of heady woody aromatics, bringing to mind a variety of polished woods like cedar, oak, teak and blackwood. Processed beeswax products, old resins like styrax, leathery labdanum, oils and waxed threads. And then the whisky explodes on the palate. A veritable avalanche: Old honey, more turpenic resins, bitter herbal teas, sooty ovens, charred firewood, cigar humidors, leather sofas. On and on with dried mud on your riding boots, dried orange peel and olives, a pinch of powdered barks for digestion. Aniseed balls, Camphor and spearmint based ointment. Superlative finesse, aristocratic even. One of the finest examples of Mortlach. 94 pts
