Highland Park 21 yo 1961 / 1983 Broadwell Vintners by R.W Duthie 46%
A surprisingly peaty Highland Park. With an oozing boggy heart, black and dripping, greasy smoke and burning hydrocarbons. A litany of phenolic touches continues with various metal polishes, hot engines in throttle. Old dried out oak. A sharp herbal tea brings medicinal camphor but also dried aromatics like mint and Angelica. No old bottle effect at all. Great profile even if not the biggest or longest or most depth. 90 pts

Perhaps it is the peat smoke and sherry but this one has a real roasted-ness to it. Roasting meat on a bed of root vegetables, topped with springs of sage and oregano. And also studded with raisins and dates apparently. Dark sherry led notes pave a rich and delicious path – sweet jam, soy sauce, tar, gamey cured meat, burnt ends, charred wood. Unfortunately it does get tannic towards the finish rather quickly, with a considerable amount of black tea. 87 pts
