Clynelish 90 yo 1972 / 2002 Scotch Malt Sales 58%
So very.. Clynelish. Top notch distillery, Top notch year. Hot wax, afternoon sun on flints and gritty gravel on chalky soil. This one feels hot, not in a raw or spicy sense, but in sunny tones of warmth and afternoon Orchards. Warm juicy stone fruit with a real tart yellow hue, vine leaves and ferns in the light, sticky sap, and rbuzzing like a gnat is the persistent grind of minerals and honey. Oh Clynelish. Hot clay pots on stoves, soot smears, scratched Bakelite, Shiso and light tobacco. This one is perhaps slightly less complex than some other 72s but very direct and absolutely bang on target. 92 pts
Clynelish 23 yo 1974 / 1998 Rare Malts 59.1%
The wax, while present, seems to have taken a back seat and the gritty minerals has come forward, now hot, crunchy and a little coarse. Pollen and little yellow flowers abound still. Overall much more angular than the 1972 and less finesse. Little petrochemical notes like flaking resins and varnish here that make it more raw, and there is also some light smoke mustard leaf, horseradish, leaf sap and capsicums. Again somewhat hot and unbridled. Objectively a less fine Clynelish. 88 pts
