Lagavulin Distiller’s Edition 1994 / 2010 lgv.4/498 43%
Anyone familiar with the standard 16 yo would find this very similar, with expected earthy peat, black tea, gritty burnt herbs, stained rubber boots and muddy seawater. But it packs a lot more richness due to its extra finishing and unfortunately wood extraction is also pronounced, particularly on the tongue. Thankfully, unlike the newer DEs where the oak comes across as pencil shavings , here it does not arrive empty handed. Dark spices, wood oils and plenty of dry wood. I do prefer the 16 yo. 86 pts
Lagavulin Friends of the Classic Malts 12 yo 1995 / 2008 48%
So this is younger but it has also been matured in first fill sherry. Unexpectedly it’s actually less rich and much more in step with the 16 yo now. The greater clarity brings out the phenolic aspects we are here for to begin with: Dry firewood, black smoke, grimy engines, muddy seawater, dried nets, lapsang souchong. It’s a chugging smokehouse redolent if dirty burnt herbal seasoning. This brings the focus back to what Lagavulin is at heart. An interesting experience for the person who likes the 12 yo special release but wished it was more of an easy drinking sweetie. 88 pts
