Caperdonich 1972 / 2011 Malts of Scotland #1144 57.4%
Baskets of ripe fruit in burnished hues of amber and golden. Nectarines, passionfruit, chiku even, sweet berries and a touch of musk. I find a perfect foil in a pine and petitgrain like woody freshness. Thick oil, honey, and loads of weight. White mushrooms, wet moss and sappy herbs suggest some earthiness but its mostly ascerbic after that. Some musky fruit notes on the palate towards the finish rounds off the excitement. Not exactly big boned but weightier than I thought, and fresh for its age. 92 pts
Caperdonich 1972 / 2008 Gordon & MacPhail # 1975 57%
Sherry influence here is amazing. All the good parts of sherry, plus chocolate, jam, seared wood, loads of char and a drop of soy sauce. Must have been a phenomenal cask. On the tongue its thick and heavy with sweet balsamic vinegar, juicy red berries and purple stonefruit, and even a drop of ivy leaf cough syrup. Can’t say much about the Caperdonich but the sherry’s one to remember. Underrated distillery. 91 pts
