Highland Park 20 yo 1962 Blackadder #2991/2 43%
Old nose, but its evident its seen better days. It’s a familiar sort of whisky yet a shade different enough to be instructive. So, we get OBE, old copper machines, wafts of smoke, and browning oranges. The barest whisper of staleness detracts from the whole though thankfully the phenols remain potent. Charcoal, sackcloth and rubbed down wood. To its credit, it displays the best trait of old peated whisky: Phenolic in many tiny ways. Unlit tobacco, lamp oil, dirt and a lick of iodized salt. 88 pts
Highland Park 27 yo 1968 Hard Brothers 43%
Lovely lovely nose. Old leather with a touch of rancio, roasted walnuts and fig paste with a slight overripe edge. The sherry here is dark haired and lascivious, and unmarred by overpowering oak. Highland Park is here, though veiled with bitter cocoa and unsweetened cola; But through these gossamer charms, phenolic glints of sooty coal, ash, mastic, powdered bark and medicated oil shine like the burn of distant stars. 92 pts
