Longmorn 1972 / 2005 Munchner Whisky-Festival 57.3%
Is it fair to expect love for an old Longmorn? Expectations met. A delightful nose, Eden at harvest, slathered in bursting orange and amber hues. Piquant marmalade boiling in the pot and oils of oranges and limes rubbed into things. Golden syrup and warm honey over supple leather. Its an unceasing parade of flavours like thick peels, cloves, just lit cigars, burdock candy, rich chamomile and spearmint tea, dry cedar, sandalwood oil and old resin pots. To keep things interesting some metallic glints appear, which heralds a phenolic slant, with metal lubricants and a hint of soot. But it needn’t try any harder, the palate captivates with honeyed pastry and toasted nuts. 93 pts
Longmorn 1973 / 2011 Gordon & Macphail #3228 for Whiskyfair Limburg 58%
This must be a tincture of herbal tea, the sort steeped with medicinal herbs and sweetened with rosehips and echinacea, and heavily overripe oranges about to grow a new kind of penicillin. An abyssal earthiness is unavoidable, here all gravel laden loam, white mushrooms, old rusty cans of Brasso and tons of sphagnum moss. This must be the cask talking. Plenty of dry oak, metal spoons on copper pans, black pepper dust and forgotten leather shoes from the back of the cabinet. Unexpectedly umami notes like chicken cubes and chopped chives appear. Somewhat odd and not quite the lushest, but its sherry driven depth is undisputed, along with its momentum and impact. 91 pts
