Lochside 29 yo 1981 / 2010 The Perfect Dram 51.1%
Yes yes and yes. It swirls languidly like a unctuous reduction of olive oil, chalk and tropical fruit puree. While not the fruitiest, the tension between the minerals and the fruit is palpable and the balance between the two is held up by layers of zest, astringent sap and crushed greenery. This is a fresh bottle but it unfurls in the glass with fanfare and is as verbose as that easy friend with stories to tell. A favourite of friends. 91pts

Now this makes you pause. Was it really a single malt? A hint of sweet graininess permeates the nose, but there’s no doubting the weight of the malt coming through with clear vegetable oils. Sweet wood, touches of brown sugar and the tropical fruit is there but again it’s not quite the exuberant sort. That said serpentine currents of ripe orange and yellow coil just under the surface, and jostle with a fennel like aromatic green streak, but also dry bark and white wine. 89 pts
