Highland Park 25 yo 1990 / 2015 Cadenhead 50.6%
Right these Highland Parks needs to be left uncorked for a full day and night when opened, and eventually it will turn from an irascible brute into a gleaming crystal, lean and sharp, glittering with stinging sea salt, white smoke, pristine white sand, bitter lemon rind and snapped stems in the wind. It’s not all razor blades though, a gentle peat warms its heart but its veins flow with medicinal syrups of gentian and aniseed. I find the typical astringent fruitiness of thins pears and green fruit in these HPs. This is a sharp and shredded whisky without an ounce of softness, but carved from mineral clarity. Again, thoroughly difficult whisky, almost something to graduate to. 91 pts
Glen Moray 30 yo 1991 / 2022 Hidden Spirits #GLM9122 50.1%
This is what you get when you put a good spirit in a quiet cask and leave it alone for three decade. Soft layers of subtleties to charm the soul. Camphor boxes filled with expensive herb and spice potpourri, the sort with whole star anise, cinnamon rolls and stalks of oregano and pine. Dried guava and hawthorn, brittle lacquer on sandalwood, Dried leather strips on straw mats over earthen floors. All of this comes and goes, never in a heavy or apparent way, but it reverberates like little echoes of bitter and medicinal chimes as it tip toes across the nose and tongue. Nonetheless it remains easily approachable and thoroughly drinkable despite its quiet introversion, before you know it the bottle is gone. 90 pts
