Highland 27 yo 1994 / 2021 Gleann Mor for Royal Mile Whiskies 50.1%
This was represented to be from Clynelish by a well known auction house. Essentially they say they asked the guy who had the cask who confirmed its provenance. Unfortunately however, I suspect the reason this parcel of 1994 casks, a number of which have made their way out to the independents, are not named and priced as such is simply that they are not very characteristic of a Clynelish at all. Did they accidentally clean those gunked up pipes in 1994 and are now making the best of a situation?
Double misfortune: it isn’t a very good whisky at all either. After 27 years, all I find is some brittle toffee, whiffs of leather, buttery cream and sprouting malt. There is certainly some heat brought by white pepper and menthol oil. Some harsh minerals tinged in sappy greens and an ascorbic quality makes this especially raw, suggesting immaturity and a wanting cask. Of Clynelish I detect no wax and no blade like minerals. Unfortunately that sums up this malt. 84 pts
