Laphroaig 9 yo 2004 / 2013 Hunter Laing ‘Advance Sample’ #10054 50%
An onrush of medicinal iodine, bandages, brine, sea muck, salt crusted clothing, intense peat and raw smoked malt. Lozenges and sea air. Blast of ash on the tongue, followed by embers and smoke, warming earth. hot coals in sooty braziers. Peat bricks, black smoke. Young, straightforward, colourful and what a unmistakable character. Not one of those where the peat got out of hand and upset this lovely medicine-maritime balance. 88 pts.
Laphroaig 12 yo 2002 / 2014 Distillery only self fill cask #6930 57%
Available to those who did the longer tour. One had the choice between a sherry cask and a bourbon, unsurprisingly the bourbon was much better. So similar but these wonderful big fat medicinal notes pop out even before the peat, and perhaps its the strength but this comes across as much oilier and thicker in texture. Medicine, liquefied lozenges and ferociously smoky from the start. Also much more ripe seaweed and green tinged rubbing oils. Daresay it’s more medicinal than coastal even, though the sea is never far away. Buoyed by glowing peat fire, smoking twigs and mulch at the point of ignition. Young and massive. No whisky like this in the world. 89 pts.
