Glen Garioch 1993 / 2014 Spirit & Cask Range #1794 52.9%
Very typical of these years. Austere and sharp, yet the wood’s given it sugar, vanilla pods and cream. Charcoal filters, petrichor, lemon rind, and as sharply mineral as the edge of a flint blade. Hot white clay and the merest hint of ferment. Whisky with a story to tell without being lush or rich in of itself. That being said the oak, through the buttercream and vanilla pods, does wonders here. Capsicums and chilli seeds for a white heat. Consider that if you added some hot wax and honey this might very well be Clynelish. Packs plenty of heat, though a tad simple on the palate but perfect at this strength. 88 pts.
Glen Garioch 25 yo 1990 Old Particular Douglas Laing #10989 56.9%
Also a lean and austere style full of activated carbon, minerals and moss. Cold granite and frosty iron. However this is much more cleanly earthy with bags of charcoal. Huge petrichor, sharp plant sap and gravelly mulch. The first rain on parched soil. Old disintegrating books, and the merest suggestion of funghi (but very clean). Menthol and crushed pepper bring the heat. Good oily weight despite the leanness. The wood acted differently too, here its hands off, with bits of cold butter and whipped cream. Not a sexy whisky, but great depth. 90 pts – if you like austere and mineral whiskies.
