Longrow 16 yo 1974 46% ~ mini, J & A Mitchell & Co Ltd
Shoe polish, black grease, old camphor boxes stained with incense implements. Soot, old newspapers, gooped up engine oil, grimy earth sticky with vegetal decomposition. Bitumen, and a foggy black smoke which seems to have caked everything rather than billow with the wind. Solidly integrated phenolic overlays that make a picture of olfactory monochromes in extraordinary depth. Encore on the tongue with touches of salt and lots of soot laden things, plus a shot of black tea concentrate. Phenomenal. 91 pts

Expecting this to be very similar and I’m not wrong. Only the wood’s a little louder, and instead of the sheer phenolic depth of the 16 we get little musty notes and smoked meats and things. Wet firewood. Tiny rancid-esque notes like butter left out too long on a sunny Singapore afternoon. Yes, much more conversant on the tongue – Salty, smoked Riesling, smoked fruit slices, just plain smoky actually. Some rosehip herb and black tea mix. Soot, gunked black mud, salty liquorice candy and sour things. Regrettably, the order of magnitude of these phenols on a lower scale than the 16yo. This is lighter, but also brighter and livelier, but comparatively the glower of the 16 yo is something to behold. 89 pts
