St. Magdalene 26 yo Cadenhead 1982 / 2008 52.7%
Later period St. Magdalene have this peculiar gasoline note and this is no exception. Linseed oil, dried grass, gasoline and new pvc at first go. Crushed chalk and crushed grapeseed. A tiny bit of rotting fruit. Not the most friendly profile but an utterly distinctive whisky. On the tongue, quite some hot and sweet green sauce in sizzling clay pots. Petrochemicals and funky fruit on the tongue. No surprises really, similar to other St. Magdalene of these vintages. Again, a very unique whisky. 88 pts
St. Magdalene 32 yo Cadenhead 1982 / 2015 58.1%
It’s like the primary elements of the 26 yo have pulled into focus for a whisky of great density and concentration much like a prism in reverse. Though like white light, this gloved fist is reluctant to be pried apart. Powerful, with minute aspects like withered leaf litter, high octane petrol, concentrated mineral oil. Tangy green in a way closer to artemisia leaf than fruit. Newly unrolled waxed paper. Also a touch medicinal – ambrette? Bitter zest. Fruit acid. Very coherent without being loquacious, and undoubtedly complex even if it remains something of an enigma. Requires full attention and an open mind. 91 pts
