Lochside 20 yo 1981 / 2001 Blackadder #615 58.4%
Sunny, fruity and joyous. A style that sets a high water mark for all whisky. Tart-sweet red berries, blackcurrants and sliced orange peel. Warm juice. Just great. Gradually turns to oily leaves and wet branches. On the palate the big fruitiness contends with a trench of herbaceous notes from eucalyptus, tiger balm, clean tobacco, crushed leaves, dried limes, dried sap and chlorophyll. Lovely whisky. 91 pts

There is some acerbic but warm citrus oil, but this is not truly a fruity sort of Lochside. Instead there’s a more industrial theme: slicing minerals, graphite, bakelite and machine lubricants. Now joined by some deep vetiver oil. Same slant on the tongue as well, where the weighty oiliness lends the perception of great mass. I can see why the SMWS said cod liver oil. Again another superb take on Lochside. 90 pts
