Jura 30 yo 44% ~ 2012 bottling
This one wants to be a sherry forward whisky but the veneer is so thin its a little underwhelming. Feels incomplete. Buttered and baked pears, brushed with marmalade, some sultanas. Sea soaked hemp ropes. Preserved oranges, some floral tea effect like a rose-hip plus chamomile infusion. Touches of honey. Unfortunately gets too planky way too quickly on the tongue – do you like chewing on 2B pencils – without the wood notes that should at least accompany such heavy wood. Rather curious! 85 pts
Jura 25 yo 1989 / 2015 Signatory #30729 60.9%
Much better. Chalk, crushed limestone, billowing white smoke and thick notes of leathery green leaves, with milky sap oozing out of broken stalks. Hints of bung cloth. There’s an ex-bourbon toffee note straining ad losing against the power of the whisky. Not sure where the peat is. The palate is where the toffee emerges, but for the massive limestone, white ash, white peppery heat. No it’s a tad brutal even: Chilli, horseradish, stinging sap and crushed leaves again. Rather extreme Jura, can totally be loved by someone else though. 86 pts
