Linkwood 15 Gordon & Macphail 100 proof / 57%
Loads of dry exotic wood notes. Top grade black pepper, cedar, blackwood, teak oil, birch and myrrh. Just dry dry dry. Black tea leaves, unlit tobacco, the wax paper that eastern style preserved fruit are boxed in and bark. Yes the sherry maturation is clear but this is crackling, dry but aromatic sherry – as opposed to a lush and rich sherry. No doubt as to the complexity of this old sherry though. Nature shop licorice root strips, burnt walnuts, hints of ginseng even, golden vetiver and smooth vegetable oils give a coating weight (but not too much). 89 pts
Mortlach Gordon & Macphail 100 proof / 57%
This is much richer in the sense of leaning towards sticky dried fruit and dessert spices. Dark shades of cocoa and treacle but also old copper, dry clods of earth, some charcoal and old leather. In fact a good amount of deep earthy notes and hits here and there of a medicinal herbaceousness. Undoubtedly a thicker more viscous spirit, heavyset and brooding. Really quite complex, to think its a NAS. Something of a gamey edge as well. 91 pts
