So two sherried Clynelish. I’ve always preferred ex bourbon Clybelish but I keep an open mind:
Clynelish Distiller’s Edition 1992 / 2007 Cl-Br:170-2g 46%
Unmistakable warm wax and honey, cruising along under a velvety cloak of dark jam, milk chocolate and herbal tea. The whole is pleasantly punctuated with yellow floral element like chrysanthemum, anise and other sour spices. On the palate it’s somewhat sootier and woodier, with a lone strand of wispy smoke. The raw wood tannin effect starts to grow, and not very pleasantly. 87 pts
Clynelish 17 yo Managers Dram 61.8% ~ bottled 1998
Thick, viscous molten wax, and many notches more animalic this time. Some blend of beeswax and paraffin, turn up the density too. Candied citrons with oily crusted rinds, black tea and a packet of Christmas spice mix. Granite slabs rubbed together. Dry compost, gingerbread and bittersweet marmalade. No doubt plenty going on. Roasted chestnuts in hot coals, smoking and sizzling. Rising smoke and hot milky sap. Powerful on the nose and powerful on the tongue. Despite the sherry’s hard sell, the dense core of hot wax and grating granite never loses the course. 91 pts
