Yellow plums, ripe but tart, a prickly mass of dessert spice and genteel drawing rooms of dark leather and oaken panels. A touch of ash, plenty of creme – especially on the palate where the wood influence surges forth. All very warm and vibrant but not the easiest. That’s not to deny the complexity here: Honey, hay, tonka, cardamom, toasted bread, chamomile syrup, some bitters, mint tea, and above all, its profound spicy and aromatic facets. 90 pts

Clearly first fill sherry in the classic sense. So a muscular spirit clothed in the lushest purples, dripping in christmas spices, and garlanded with gingerbread, blackstrap, sarsaparilla and licorice root. Despite all this, the whisky is in fact dry and even a bit umami, with the saltiness of seasoning and more than a hint of hot coals and char behind hot pans and heat. 91 pts
