Isle of Jura 30 yo 1966 / 1996 Signatory #1868/69 52.6%
Love at first whiff. Unbelievable whisky. Deep resinous wood, coal, camphor, oily black leather harnesses, burning caramel, wet tobacco. A veritable deluge of phenols. Dry black earth, choking engine fumes, crusted soot and pitch. No stopping this whisky! Hot sea air, liquorice, tarry vetiver, incense, spades of festering peat and dirty salt. It goes on, a legion of little phenolic notes, punctuated by a silky but full oak sans tannins. A perfect conjunction of spirit, wood and time. 94 pts
Isle of Jura 30 yo 1966 / 1996 Kingsbury #1867 49.7%
Far less phenolic, and maybe closer to what a Jura is. Damp notes of musty thickened honey and black herbal tinctures. Dusty sooty candle stubs thrown in a pile and motor oil stains on concrete floors. Warehouse and mushrooms. Dirty seawater, old ropes and sea worn rubber boots. This one really sings on the tongue with brown smoke from choking fires coaxed from wet branches. More salt here as well as rosehip tea, paraffin, sour olives and salty citrus zest. Charmingly cantankerous. 90 pts

These old Juras sound absolutely fantastic. A shame they’ll be next-to-impossible to find (for an affordable price).
